Fabrizio Maltese is a European freelance photographer and documentary filmmaker, renowned for his film-related work.
Maltese’s studio, Officina Maltese offers a broad range of photographic services, from the initial creative briefing to the final delivery, taking care of all the production and post-production aspects, for worldwide clients.
The Italian-born photographer works often on location and travels to the world’s major film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Toronto to portray actors and directors for magazines and newspapers from around the globe.
As a stills photographer he has worked on over two dozens European arthouse titles, often with major stars, including Academy Award winners or nominees.
Maltese has also directed and shot three feature documentaries. Twenty-Five Palms was shot in Palm Springs and premiered at the 2015 Palm Springs International Film Festival while his 50 Days in the Desert, which was shot in the Sahara, premiered at the 2016 Palm Springs Film Festival and also played festivals including the Transylvania International Film Festival and Luxembourg City Film Festival.
His latest feature, California Dreaming , is a portrait of a community living in a small town in the high Mojave Desert, California City, which is still the third largest city in California by area, once imagined to rival Los Angeles.
His photographic work is regularly the object of showcases around the world. The 2008 exhibition, Faces of French Cinema, was singled out by leading trade paper The British Journal of Photography as the number one photography show to visit in the U.K. and was also on display in Sao Paulo and Lisbon. His 2012 exhibition Role/Play was on view in Sydney and Luxembourg City, and his 2013 showcase V.I.P. Area was a site-based exhibition that was part of the Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland.
The world’s largest photography publication, U.S.-based Popular Photography, showcased his work in a Berlin Film Festival portfolio in 2009. Since 2011 he is a regular contributor to The Hollywood Reporter with his exclusive portrait work from the major film festivals.
He’s the only photographer to have won the Venice Movie Stars Photography Award twice (in 2005 for a portrait of Isabelle Huppert and again in 2012 for a portrait of Nicolas Cage). He was nominated in 2015 for a National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Award for his portraits of Quentin Tarantino, Uma Thurman and John Travolta, reunited for the 20th anniversary of Pulp Fiction and shot for The Hollywood Reporter.
Maltese’s work also includes fashion, architecture, fine art, lifestyle and food and travel photography.
